Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

Helping You Cover the Gaps in Original Medicare

What Is a Medicare Supplement Plan?

Medicare Supplement Insurance—commonly known as Medigap—is coverage offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare that help to pay for the healthcare costs not covered by Original Medicare (Parts A and B), such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans work alongside your Medicare coverage, giving you more predictable out-of-pocket costs and added peace of mind.

How Do Medicare Supplement Plans Work?

Once enrolled in Original Medicare, you can add a Medigap plan to cover the remaining costs that Medicare doesn’t pay. Here’s how it works:

  1. Medicare pays its share of approved services.

  2. Your Medigap plan pays its share, depending on the plan you choose.

  3. You have little to no out-of-pocket cost, especially with more comprehensive plans like Plan G.

You can see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare—no networks, no referrals needed.

What Does Medigap Cover?

Medigap plans don’t replace your Medicare coverage—they supplement it. While each plan is standardized and labeled by letter (e.g., Plan G, Plan N), they all help reduce or eliminate your share of costs for:

  • Hospital and medical coinsurance

  • Part A and B deductibles (varies by plan)

  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance

  • Foreign travel emergency care

  • Excess charges from doctors who don’t accept Medicare assignment

Note: Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. You’ll need to enroll in a standalone Part D plan to cover your medications.

Why Choose a Medicare Supplement Plan?

  • Freedom to choose any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare

  • Consistent monthly premiums and minimal unexpected bills

  • No referrals required to see specialists

  • Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay your premium

  • Great for frequent travelers or those with higher medical needs

Is a Medigap Plan Right for You?

Medigap might be your best option if you:

  • Prefer flexibility in choosing healthcare providers

  • Want to minimize or eliminate out-of-pocket costs

  • Travel frequently

  • Don’t need extra benefits like dental or vision

  • Are enrolled in Original Medicare and want to enhance it without changing the structure of your coverage

Important Things to Know

  • Enrollment timing matters: The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period (the 6 months after you turn 65 and enroll in Part B). After that, you may be subject to health underwriting in most states.

  • Standardized plans: Medigap plans are federally standardized, so Plan G from one company offers the same benefits as Plan G from another—only the premiums differ.

  • Monthly premiums: These vary based on your age, location, and the insurer you choose.

  • No drug coverage: Pair your Medigap plan with a standalone Medicare Part D plan for prescription coverage.
